Bear who killed Italian jogger relocated to German sanctuary
A brunette woman who killed a jogger in the Italian Alps in 2023 reached Germany and rests in the sanctuary where she must remain.
The bear, known as JJ4 or Gaia, was transferred to a high security enclosure at Wolf and Bear Park alternatives to the German Black Forest in the southwest of the country.
Accompanied by a team from the park, Gaia reached Germany at 6 a.m. (0400 GMT). His trip from Italy went well, said staff. “She is treated, has eaten and behaves calmly.”
She was based first in the box in which she was transported and had to leave her during the morning to explore the area where she was to live, the staff said.
The bear attacked and killed a jogger on a popular mountain path in the northern region of Italy of Trentino-Alto Adige in April 2023.
The animal was captured and taken to an enclosure near the city of Trento. Regional President Maurizio Fugatti ordered Gaia’s death, but the courts arrested the decree after petitions of animal rights.
Gaia was to be transferred to Germany in 2024, but the construction of the 1 million euros enclosure ($ 1.1 million), funded by donations, has faced significant setbacks due to strong precipitation in the mountainous and wooded terrain.
Jurka, Gaia’s mother, has been accommodated at the animal’s sanctuary since 2010.
Gaia should also be renamed, because a wolf in the sanctuary has the same name.
The date of his transfer from Italy was initially kept secret among the fears of the demonstrations.
