BLS Commissioner Nominee’s Suggestion to Suspend Monthly Jobs Report Is ‘Like Gouging Our Eyes Out’

President Donald Trump appointed an economist from the heritage foundation on Monday evening, which publicly criticized the federal data collection at the Bureau of Labor Statistics to lead the Agency.

On Tuesday, Fox Business published an interview with the candidate, EJ Antoni, during which Antoni suggested stopping the publication of the monthly job report and echoed the unfounded affirmations of Trump according to which reports included misleading information.

“How can you devil the companies supposed to plan – or how is the Fed supposed to conduct a monetary policy – when they do not know how many jobs are added or lost in our economy? It is a serious problem that must be resolved immediately,” said Antoni to sponder digital in an interview on August 4.

The comments, which intervened after Trump dismissed the commissioner of the previous BLS on dull employment figures, attracted anger on social networks and triggered anxiety among economists who stressed the importance of the monthly job report and the freedom of political pressure from the office, in interviews with TPM.

“The fact that he moves the markets tells you that this is precious information, this is credible information, this is the best information available at the time it is published, and delete that information is like Gouer our eyes,” Aaron Sojourner, principal researcher at the non-Partisan We Upjohn Institute for Employment Research. “It makes our ability to see what is going on around us; This forces us to make worse decisions. ”

Michael Horrigan, president of the Upjohn Institute, said in a separate interview that the general “lack of faith” of the Trump administration in federal statistics was worrying, but hopes that the next BLS commissioner would include the gravity of the agency’s non -partial reputation.

“If someone came with a political program,” said Horrigan, “he should have a different job.”

In response to a TPM survey on the question of whether Trump planned or planned to publish a decree to stop the publication of data on federal monthly jobs mandated legally, the White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers, replied President Antoni named Antoni to “restore the confidence of America” in BLS employment data.

“Antoni’s education and vast experience as economist have prepared it to produce specific public data for businesses, households and decision-makers to enlighten their decision-making,” Rogers said in an email. “Unlike the previous commissioner, Antoni will produce solutions late for long -term problems in the office and will provide Americans with the precise data they deserve.”

Antoni must now be confirmed by the Senate.

William Beach, the former BLS commissioner appointed by Trump, expressed skepticism that Antoni or any BLS commissioner ceases in fact the collection and publication of monthly data on jobs, in an interview with TPM. The report is mandated by federal law and the suspension of its publication would require a decree.

“And he may be able to get it,” said Beach, “but there would be a lot of return from Wall Street … who uses these monthly reports to obtain advice on their business decisions.”

In particular, Antoni has been hypercritical of federal economic data in general, and BLS jobs report specifically. In May, he suggested routine revisions to BLS job data meant that the Biden administration had created “false” jobs and had confused two different types of BLS datasets in an editorial for the Townhall conservative publication.

Trump dismissed the former BLS commissioner, Erika Mcentarfer, on August 1, only a few hours after the July job report showed a slowdown in the labor market and revised the employment of May and June to decrease 258,000 jobs. His dismissal was criticized by economists, some Republican senators and Beach, the former BLS commissioner appointed by Trump.

“It is a much more important job than on July 31 before Erika’s dismissal,” said Beach on TPM on Tuesday. “The entering commissioner, anyone, must restore confidence and really work with his staff.”

Beach, who also worked at the Heritage Foundation and was the founding director of his Center for Data Analysis, said that he had spoken with Antoni, as he had done with Mcentarfer before joining the BLS.

Antoni has worked in a succession of defense groups and conservative reflection groups since 2020, according to his audience Linkedin. Antoni was a member of the Committee for Unleash Prosperity, a conservative economic bank. He then joined the Heritage Foundation, the conservative organization which has the author of the Directive on the presidential policy of the 2025 project which served as a roadmap for a large part of the second Trump administration. Antoni contributed to the 2025 project, according to a Washington Post report, and was promoted to chief economist of the Heritage Foundation in May.

His appointment caused a storm of fire among economists and researchers on social networks. Jessica Riedl, economist at the Manhattan Institute, a reflection group on conservative policy, criticized Trump’s appointment on Antoni in an article on X.

“What is sad is that there are countless competent and respected conservative economists (especially in universities) who could do great work to manage BL,” wrote Riedl. “But no credible economist would take a job in which you would be dismissed to publish specific data.”

Jason Furman, former president of the Council of Economic Advisors under Obama, qualified Antoni completely unqualified in a position as social media. “He is an extreme supporter and has no relevant expertise,” wrote Furman.

Brian Albrecht, chief economist of the International Center for Law and Economics, posted a thread to X, allegedly shown several times that Antoni was hyper-partisan or displayed insufficient economic knowledge.

The economist Sojourner said that Antoni’s partisan trends are exactly the reason for Trump. “I think he has been chosen because what he has built a record in recent years is to attack BLS; for having made the same kind of accusations against the BL as the president made [Aug. 1].

“A statistical agency subject to political control,” added Sojourner, “has no credible economic value. It’s a bit useless.”

Beach, however, expressed confidence in Antoni’s potential leadership.

“I think that his reputation – I had a very similar reputation – which follows you in the office, and you must align yourself immediately with the staff in management positions,” said Beach. “His reputation does not matter,” he said later. “It is unimportant because what you do inside the BLS is very different from what you do in a reflection group.”

All eyes will now be on the Senators Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), Thom Tillis (R-R-NC), Rand Paul (R-KY) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), who each expressed their concerns after the president rejected Mcentarfer. Antoni cannot lose the support of three Republican senators to be successfully confirmed.
