Body camera footage captured the dramatic rescue of a baby trapped inside a vehicle stuck in rising floodwaters Saturday as floodwaters appeared to sweep the car toward a creek in Beeville, Texas.

The incident, which occurred about 100 miles southeast of San Antonio, occurred as strong storms dumped rain on the area, quickly making roads dangerous.

Police say the sudden rain submerged a low-water crossing, catching a vehicle as it entered the crossing.

“Recently, officers and firefighters responded after a vehicle entered a flooded creek crossing and began to be pushed by water,” the Beeville Police Department said in a Facebook post Saturday.

Authorities warned that conditions deteriorated within minutes, noting that rapid rain left no time to place barricades before the vehicle arrived at the crossing.

A fire chief at the scene attempted to stop the driver, who ultimately did not see the crew in time, police said.

Footage shows the vehicle stranded as the water level rises rapidly, reaching the top of its wheels. An officer can also be heard in the video reporting that the car was pushed toward a creek by rising waters.

As crews assessed the situation, the driver was heard yelling to a nearby police officer that there was a baby inside the vehicle.

The responding officer then ran through the floodwaters, opened the door and pulled out the car containing the baby.

After bringing the baby to safety, another responder was seen quickly using a jacket to protect the child from the continued rain.

“Fortunately, no one was injured,” police said, indicating the driver was also safely rescued from the vehicle.

Beeville police used the video as a stark warning about the dangers of floodwaters, emphasizing that “what may seem passable one minute can quickly become dangerous the next.”

“It doesn’t take a lot of moving water to push a vehicle off the road, and by the time you realize how dangerous it is, it may already be too late,” the ministry said.

“If barricades are erected around a road or level crossing, do not drive around them. They are there for a reason. Going around the barricades not only puts lives at risk, but is also a criminal offense.”

Drivers are urged to slow down during heavy rain and avoid flooded areas, including creek crossings and other low-lying roads.

“No race, shortcut or destination is worth risking your life or the safety of your family,” police added.
