Bombardier’s Global 8000 business jet officially entered service Monday as the first of its type was delivered to its new owner.

Company officials hosted an event at Bombardier’s aircraft assembly center in Mississauga, Ontario, where Canadian business owner Patrick Dovigi received the keys to the first delivered Global 8000. Dovigi has been a Bombardier customer for more than 15 years, the manufacturer said, and its new Global 8000 will replace its current Global 7500.

The Global 8000 is the fastest civil aircraft since Concorde, with a maximum speed of Mach 0.95. It has a range of 8,000 nm and a cabin altitude of 2,691 feet to 41,000 feet, the lowest of any business jet currently in production.

The aircraft received type certification from Transport Canada in November. FAA and European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) certifications are still pending.

“Pride and enthusiasm only begin to describe what the entry into service of the Global 8000 means for all of us at Bombardier, 18,000 people,” Bombardier President and CEO Éric Martel said in a press release. “Every innovation and detail of the Global 8000 reflects the hard work, creativity and dedication of our teams. This revolutionary aircraft is redefining the business aviation landscape with its innovative design, signature smooth flight, unmatched performance and a kept promise to our customers.

The business jet, along with the Global 7500, has been under development since 2010. Bombardier has said through 2025 that it expects the Global 8000 to enter service this year.

The aircraft’s interior features four living areas, a separate crew rest area, Bombardier’s own air purification system and lighting synchronized with the circadian rhythm of its passengers.
