Bus traveling from Lima to Peru’s Amazon overturns on highway in the Andes, killing at least 18

Lima, Peru (AP) – A bus traveling from Lima to the Amazon region of Peru overturned on a highway in the Andes, making at least 18 people who died and 48 injured, the authorities announced on Friday.
The double floor bus belonging to the company “Expreso Molina Líder Internacional” left the road and came across a slope in the Palca district, in the Junín region, said Junin’s health director, Clifor Curipaco, to journalists. The authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident.
Videos broadcast on local television showed the separate bus in two, while the firefighters and the police tried to save the injured.
It was not the first fatal bus accident in 2025, another bus fell into a river on January 3, leaving six dead and 32 injured.
A study by the prosecutor general revealed that the carelessness of the river and excessive speed are the main causes of accidents in Peru.
Road transport is poorly monitored by the Peruar authorities, and emergency aid is so slow and disorganized. In 2024, there were approximately 3,173 deaths due to traffic accidents in the South American country, according to official data of the Death Information System.
