China Peak opens for Thanksgiving weekend with limited runs

Heading to China Peak Resort after Thanksgiving is a tradition for many Central Valley families, including Brandon Daniels and his two little ones.
“It’s fun to fly down the mountain and there’s nothing like it,” he said. “Have memories and teach them to have fun and be active.”
These Visalia sisters also love gearing up and hitting the slopes and say they’re ready to take full advantage of their season passes from day one.
“It was really fun. The snow is good. It’s a good first day of the season.” » said sisters Trista Hulsey and Leah Dekedan. “It’s pretty cool to see the little kids do that because I’m like, ‘wow, they’re pretty much better than me’ and it’s humbling!”
ABC30 Sky View drone video captures several other people enjoying the mountain on this sunny Friday.
Owner Tim Cohee and his son Troy say every effort has been made to prepare the resort.
Troy says each year poses a different challenge.
“Even though Mother Nature hasn’t really put pressure on us this season, we made some snow with the marginal temperatures we had, we fixed a trail and we opened up a little bit,” Troy said.
In the entire Golden State, only five resorts opened this weekend, which came as a surprise to the Cohee family, which has been in the business for decades.
Troy says they’re hoping for more snow and cold temperatures in the future.
“We still have work to do on the currently open trial and we want to open chairs 2 and 1 and many more,” he said.
The resort has also renovated part of the day lodge and will offer new opportunities and spaces for beginners.
“Once the season really gets going, we plan to open our first turning center on the other side of the mainstream. A 200-foot carper. A private learning area,” Troy said.
The resort will be open every weekend until the end of December, when it will be in full swing for the winter.
