ChromeOS Is Weirdly Great With Old Tube TVs

Like many geeks my age, I felt the need for the hot glow of a CRT display in my life, and I am now three of these glass sirens, reminding myself of my childhood. It was ideal for video games, but what about standard definition television shows?

It is quite easy to connect a DVD player, but there is a lot of perfect content for a CRT television on streaming services like Netflix and Amazon, so how to get them into my Tube TV with the least hassle?

So why do I even want to watch TV shows on a CRT? Of course, CRTs have many advantages for games, both inherent advantages of CRT display technology and the fact that these games were created to be viewed on a CRT, but is that true for television shows and films?

Well, with regard to the levels of color, contrast and black, my OLED and Mini-LED displays have all my CRT, even my huge 34-inch SONY TRINITRON, which was quite high-end in its time. However, SD content always ends up being worse on these modern screens than on my CRT televisions. There are some different reasons for this, and not all apply to each show. The big one for me is scaling and sharpening that must be made when scaling an SD video at 4K on a modern TV.

For example, when I look Star Trek: Deep space 9 On my LG OLED TV, he looks macular. Frankly, the show is not at all like what it is supposed to. This is one thing when a show was deliberately remastered, as they did to The next generationBut this increase on the fly does not work for me.

Why did I bought Star Trek on Blu-ray despite streaming services

I no longer have to suffer from separation from the saucer.

Until now, almost all the classic television shows of the 80s or 90s that I tried on my OLED, my mini-iPad 4: 3, and my two CRT televisions, just look like CRT screens. The biggest difference occurs when I want to watch classic caricatures. I have both the classic Ninja Turtles mutant teenage And Tintin’s adventures On the DVD, and these programs become a ugly mess on a flat panel. On my CRT, they seem smooth and the faults are hidden. In short, if it is an SD 4: 3 program, I probably want to watch it on one of my CRT televisions if possible.

Windows and macOS do not play well with older televisions

I tried to connect my Windows and MacBook laptop both to my CRT televisions, and I just can’t do it properly. On my MacBook, for example, the user interface will simply not go to 4: 3, and even when I choose an appearance 4: 3: 300×600 or 1024×768 ratio, half of the screen content is off screen. Worse, I end up with these black bars on the sides of the videos that should fill the screen, but everything seems to be settled on 16: 9, whatever the resolution I choose.

On Windows, things are a little better and I can at least have the whole screen fills, which means that I have a way to watch my old emissions, but with a huge amount of surface and no way to see the reading controls.

I even tried to connect to other devices that I had, like my iPad, which was surprisingly better than my Windows and Mac computers, but all left me without the complete image.

This old Sony CRT made me realize how terrible modern television audio is

We have lost more than image quality when we abandoned the CRT.

Then, just because I had missed options, I connected my laptop Chromebook Plus, and wouldn’t believe it I made it work perfectly. Not only has he published an appropriate signal 4: 3 properly evolved the Chromeos user interface to the display, but he also has tools built directly in the display utility which made him absurdly simple to compose exactly where the edges of the image should be.

You can stretch and move the image using an intuitive keyboard control set. Just use the cursor keys and the shift button to quickly get the perfect image. To be honest, I do not know why these tools are included before and centers, because they are only really useful when connecting to an analog display, but that is perhaps exactly why. After all, Chromeos devices are mainly used in schools and in large organizations. This is where you are most likely to find an old equipment to always be used, which could require a little refining.

Whatever the reason why it is here and work as it does, I hope they don’t change it!

Just in case you wonder how I physically connected my chromebook to a CRT TV (and also because I really want to talk about it), here is the basic chain:

The TV is a 34-inch Sony Trinitron KV-L34MF-1, although I also have a Samsung flat screen CRT with a much smaller and much more recent Samsung screen.

I watched retro science fiction television shows, the 90s and many other types of classic pre-screen content streaming thanks to my chromebook, and honestly, everything seems quite excellent. I still mainly look at my DVDs on these screens, but now I can rather move these DVDs in my plex library.

How Chromebox missed the Mini PC revolution

In this boxing match, Chromeos could have been a competitor.

I plan a renovated chromebox now, to use as a permanent CRT HTPC, which is not a sentence that I have never considered writing before! It just shows that when you try random stuff, you can always meet something that changes the way you do things completely and for the best.
