NYC’s Commie Mayor Mamdani, Democrats Have a Message for ‘Rich’ Homeowners on Tax Day – RedState

Democrat, democratic socialist, communist… whichever way you want to slice it, New York is run by some of the most far-left lunatics in the country. And they chose Tax Day to remind us once again.

What are they doing now? New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced a new surcharge (read: tax) for anyone who owns residential property worth $5 million or more, but does not reside in New York. We call this the pied-à-terre tax:

…Governor. Kathy Hochul decided to push for a so-called pied-à-terre tax aimed at the ultra-rich who live primarily outside the city.

Ms. Hochul will formally propose an annual surtax on second homes in New York worth $5 million or more, she said Tuesday.

The exact cost of the surcharge has not yet been determined, but the governor hopes to raise $500 million annually that will go toward closing New York City’s deficit, estimated at $5.4 billion in the next fiscal year.

Notice that, readers? This urgent need, which Democrats readily admit, comes from the fact that they must fill a budgetary hole that they themselves created through mismanagement and excessive spending; $5.4 billion is a huge pit of waste, fraud and abuse.

Hochul shared a clip from the announcement presser on his

Readers probably know that Mamdani has made no secret of his position on some of the most fundamental principles of communism. Before returning to him, everything was not pessimistic on April 15. My colleague Bob Hoge wrote that the media was surprisingly congratulatory to Republicans because Tax Day won for many Americans in their 2025 returns, thanks to the OBBB (One Big Beautiful Bill) that was passed and then signed into law by President Trump.

Back to Mayor Mamdani. This is not the first example of his approach completely on the socialist slope.

RedState just wrote Tuesday about its plan for free, government-run grocery stores — a concept that would make Stalin and company proud.

And although the problem predates Mamdani’s move into Gracie Mansion, the woes of all New Yorkers seeking safe haven from criminals and lunatics in the City That Never Sleeps have increased thanks to liberal governance in recent years.

Here’s the problem Hochul, Mamdani, and their friends in the Democratic-majority legislature are going to realize if they put this penalty into law: These are the last people you should want to deter from growing your city or state’s economy by imposing punitive taxation.

Such taxes do not create the conditions that the state hopes for. We are talking about people who live in a free country, not serfs. People who are legally capable of entering into contracts with others, who are able to do business with others of their own free will. These second home owners will happily sell their homes before paying any pied-à-terre tax; they can afford to stay in the finest and chicest hotels in midtown Manhattan. And their profits will instead go to Chandler/Gilbert, Arizona, which already attracts people from my state’s high-tech corridor, according to a survey in late 2024, or they could take their money overseas to invest in the luxury skyscrapers of Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). What would they have to lose?

You know what else this new tax will not do? Ensuring safe streets for New York residents, who less than a week ago saw news reports of a madman hitting subway riders at Grand Central Station with a machete, before law enforcement was able to eliminate the threat with their weapons (link above). Guess who hates law enforcement? And weapons?

No one should have to put up with this commie bullshit.

Utah Republican Sen. Mike Lee has both a constitutional and math problem for everyone regarding the property tax proposal:
