US, Iran Are on the Cusp of Peace Deal – RedState

Earlier Saturday, RedState shared the most recent updates on the potential U.S.-Iran peace deal, including President Donald Trump’s new comments on the process and meetings he had at the White House, as well as a phone call with Gulf region officials and diplomats on the matter.

My colleague Ward Clark wrote that “President Trump said Saturday that the proposed deal was a ‘solid 50-50.’

President Trump said it was a “solid 50/50” Saturday on his ability to forge a peace deal with Iran and that he would likely decide by May 24 whether to resume the war and “send them to the kingdom come.”

Trump made the comments as he prepared to meet with negotiators Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner to discuss Iran’s latest response to the US peace proposal, Axios reported.

Negotiators from Pakistan and Qatar visited Tehran on Friday in the hope of reaching an agreement.

The president said he had reviewed a “draft” of a deal, but he would not reveal whether he approved it, he told CBS News.

“They’re getting a lot closer,” he said.

Today, things seem to have moved into another gear. President Trump said Saturday afternoon on his Truth Social account that we were close to a deal with the Iranians, saying it was “largely negotiated”:

It read:

I’m in the Oval Office of the White House where we just had a very good call with President Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan of the United Arab Emirates, Emir Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani and Minister Ali al-Thawadi of Qatar, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir Ahmed Shah of Pakistan, President Recep Tayyip. Erdoğan of Turkey, President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt, King Abdullah II of Jordan and King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain regarding the Islamic Republic of Iran and everything related to a memorandum of understanding relating to PEACE. An agreement has been extensively negotiated, subject to finalization between the United States of America, the Islamic Republic of Iran and the various other listed countries. Furthermore, I had a call with Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, which also went very well. Final aspects and details of the agreement are currently being discussed and will be announced soon. In addition to many other elements of the agreement, the Strait of Hormuz will be open. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP

The AP report notes “[t]here, no mention was made of Iran’s nuclear program and highly enriched uranium, which Iran later sought to discuss. » A regional official who spoke anonymously to the news agency gave some details:

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the closed-door deliberations, warned that “last-minute disputes” could derail the effort. This is not the first time in recent weeks that a deal has been called a done deal.

He said the potential deal would include a formal declaration of the end of the war, as well as two-month negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program. The Strait of Hormuz would be reopened and the United States would end its blockade of Iranian ports.

The report included a statement from an Iranian regime spokesperson:

Iranian state television earlier quoted Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei describing the draft as a “framework agreement” and adding: “We want it to include the main issues necessary to end the imposed war and other issues of essential importance to us. Then, within a reasonable period of time, between 30 and 60 days, the details are discussed and finally a final agreement is reached.”

He said the Strait of Hormuz was among the topics discussed.

“Over the past week, the trend has been towards narrowing differences,” Baghaei told Iran’s official IRNA news agency, adding that nuclear issues were not part of the ongoing negotiations.

“Our goal at this stage is to end the war on all fronts, including in Lebanon,” Baghaei said, adding that lifting sanctions against Tehran “was explicitly included in the text and remains our fixed position.”

This is a developing story. RedState will provide updates as warranted.
