Connecticut Sun could move to Boston by 2027, Gary Washburn of Boston Globe reported on Saturday afternoon. The Mohegan Sun tribe – The current team of the team – has agreed to sell the team to a group led by Steve Pagliuca, which is one of the minority owners of the Boston Celtics since 2002.
Pagliuca hoped to buy the Celtics in the past year from his colleague Wyc Grosbeck, but another property group, led by Bill Chisholm, was selected. Now, the longtime owner of Boston sports could bring women’s basketball to Boston.
According to the globe, Pagliuca has agreed to pay a record of $ 325 million for the team and also contribute $ 100 million for a new practice of practice in Boston. It is the highest price ever paid for a professional women’s sports team. (For reference, Pagliuca and the other Celtics owners buy Celtics for $ 360 million in 2002).
The SUN does not currently have its own practice of practice in Uncasville, Connecticut, where the team is currently based.
WNBA could block sun move to Boston
An important note is that the sale must still be approved by the WNBA and the governor of the League, and according to a source of globe, the WNBA prefers to save Boston as a city of potential expansion in 2033.
The WNBA published the following statement to the Boston Globe: “Resettlement decisions are made by the WNBA Governors’ Council and not by individual teams. As part of our latest expansion process, in which three new franchises were allocated to Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia on June 30, 2025, new additional cities also applied WNBA teams and which remain under active consideration. These other cities remain under study on the basis of the in -depth work they have done as part of the expansion process and are currently priority in Boston.
WNBA is in the midst of a major expansion
In the current state of things, there are 13 teams in the WNBA, the Golden State Valkyries being the expansion team of this year. Next season, the Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire will join the League, while Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia are ready to obtain their own teams in the next five years.
The Sun played two regular season games at TD Garden in Boston – last year against Los Angeles Sparks and this year against Indiana fever – and the two games were sold. The Celtics players attended the two games.
After last year’s match between the sparks and the sun, the Sun Dijonai Star Carrington sprang from the atmosphere.
“It was great,” said Carrington. “It was as if each match should feel like.”
Dijonai Carrington asked what the atmosphere at TD Garden looked like:

Connecticut Sun has long been one of the first WNBA teams, but they are currently in a reconstruction season and have a first 5-21 record.
Pagliuca hoped to bring a WNBA team to Boston for years, which Governor Maura Healey and Mayor Michelle Wu both expressed. Michael Carter-Williams and Donnie Wahlberg also worked before to bring a team to Boston, either via the sale or expansion of the WNBA.
The Mohegan tribe has already informed the ticket holders that the team will play in Uncasville for the 2026 season, but this decision positions the team for a relocation of Boston in 2027, as long as the WNBA approves the transaction.
