Conor McGregor Will move forward with his presidential candidacy in Ireland, despite the surprisingly little support for voters.

Shortly after meeting the president Donald Trump In March, the former UFC championship announced for the first time its intention to present itself to the presidency in its country of origin. In a long tweet, McGregor underlined the immigration bill proposed by the European Union and promised to fight it.

Following this announcement, Irish publications quickly explained why McGregor’s presidential aspirations were practically impossible. To begin with, Irish law requires the appointment of 20 members of the Irish Assembly – known as the Ouireachtas – for a candidate to appear on the ballot. An investigation in March with Irish councilors revealed that McGregor had almost no support among elected officials.

In addition, a survey published after his announcement showed that 7% of respondents said they would have for him.

Without being discouraged, McGregor published another long tweet on Tuesday criticizing the current appointment process and calling for its modification:

To the estimated citizens of Irish Irish and Irish diaspora,

Me, Conor McGregor declares by this my intention to seek the post of president of Ireland. The current constitutional framework, however, presents an important obstacle to democratic participation. The current regulations oblige to demand that a candidate must obtain appointments of twenty members of the OUREachtas or four county councils to be eligible for the ballot. This system, although intended to guarantee a certain degree of political influence among the candidates, inadvertently restricted the direct voice of the Irish electorate.

In light of this, I propose a petition to recommend a modification of the appointment process to allow my name to be included on the ballot. I maintain that the citizens of Ireland, in the country and abroad, should have the unhindered right to determine the candidates who appear on the presidential bulletin. Therefore, I implore you to join me in this company by signing this petition. Your support will help defend a more inclusive and democratic electoral process, thus allowing Ireland residents to shape their own future.

Sign my petition now to save Ireland!
