In February, the Department of Homeland Security purchased an empty warehouse for more than $128 million in Social Circle, Georgia, to turn it into a detention center. The planned center would house 10,000 people and triple the population of the Social Circle.
Residents, some of whom support President Donald Trump’s mass eviction policy, rejected the plan.
New DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin has suspended any new warehouse purchases to house immigrants, but plans for acquired facilities are unclear.
The BBC’s Madeline Halpert spoke to residents about their concerns.
