Country Star Just Got a Gift of Redemption After Criminal Past With Pardon – RedState

This is a redemption story perfect for the Christmas season.

I warn readers in advance that this is one of those stories so raw and so real that most people will need at least a few tissues to get through the whole story. There’s no manufactured tugging at the heartstrings here, either. The redemption story of Nashville-based, Grammy-winning country music singer Jelly Roll (real name: Jason Deford) is better than anything a movie producer could come up with for the big screen. But before we get to that, something else almost as great happened to Jelly Roll recently.

This took place during a sit-down with Joe Rogan on his podcast Joe Rogan Experience (JRE), when the host asked Deford to talk about his past, including a time when he wasn’t living a good life. In fact, in 2008, Jelly Roll was in prison. One of the little things that helped him cope with life back then was music, the dinger said, particularly the music of country star Craig Morgan.

Deford was unable to be present for his daughter’s birth, and Morgan’s song, “Almost Home,” helped put the new father in the mindset needed to stay out of prison for good. Fast forward to when Deford was on probation and wearing an ankle monitor. He loved Morgan so much that he decided to see the star perform at the Grand Ole Opry.

Back to now. Rogan had a big surprise for his guest, with Deford learning from his country music hero, Craig Morgan, that he had been invited to join the Grand Ole Opry.

How awesome. Deford has been open about his past, which included drug addiction and, since age 14, a seemingly revolving door of stints in prison for more than a decade, with “convictions including aggravated robbery, shoplifting, drug possession and drug dealing.” All that is now erased, with the stroke of a pen with one of Tennessee Republican Governor Bill Lee’s annual pardons. This is something that the Volunteer State legislature is traditionally doling out at this time in a spirit of giving and love:

Republican Gov. Bill Lee granted the pardon after the Grammy-nominated musician’s friends and civic leaders joined in an outpouring of support.

He said a pardon would make it easier for him to travel abroad on concert tours and do Christian missionary work without having to fill out cumbersome paperwork.

He was one of 33 people to receive a pardon Thursday from Lee, who for years has issued clemency rulings during the Christmas period. Lee said Jelly Roll’s application underwent the same extensive, months-long review as other applicants. The State Parole Board issued a unanimous, non-binding recommendation for Jelly Roll’s pardon in April.

Gov. Lee said at a news conference that Deford’s story is “remarkable, and it’s a redemptive and powerful story, which is what you’re looking for and what you’re hoping for.” He added that although he hasn’t had the opportunity to meet the singer, he would like to.

You could say he’s on a roll. The man known as Jelly Roll, who has done many bad things in the past, has come full circle. This is beautiful for someone who deserves to be rewarded for changing their life. We need to hear more of these stories, especially given so much evil that has happened around the world in recent weeks and months. Merry Christmas!
