HBO Sex and the city Star Cynthia Nixon spoke at a “Gays for Zohran” rally, where she encouraged members of the LGBTQ community to campaign for Democratic socialist candidate for New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani, despite recently meeting with a Ugandan official who pushed for a law imprisoning gays for life.

“Gays for Zohran! Register with them, go door to door in your neighborhood, tell people with all your heart why you are voting for Zohran and why you think they should too,” Nixon said.

Video footage of Nixon making his remarks was posted by the group “Gays for Zohran,” which describes itself on Instagram as “LGBTQ+ New Yorkers” who “are ready to elect [Zohran Mamdani] as the next mayor.

Notably, Mamdani — who was born in Uganda and holds dual Ugandan-American citizenship — was recently photographed meeting with Rebecca Kadaga, a Ugandan official who has championed anti-LGBTQ policies, including life imprisonment for gay people.

“Nice to meet Zohran Mamdhani (sic) new mayor of New York. Good luck in the next phase of the elections,” Kadaga wrote in a July 1 article, sharing a photo of herself with the socialist candidate for New York mayor.

Kadaga – who has served as Uganda’s first deputy prime minister since 2021, after serving as speaker of parliament for ten years – announced in 2012 that she was passing a draconian law imposing harsh penalties on homosexuals, according to a report by New York Post.

The Ugandan official further called the legislation a “Christmas present” for those who support it.

“Ugandans want this law as a Christmas gift. They asked for it and we will give them this gift,” Kadaga said at the time.

In 2024, the Ugandan government confirmed another law, the Anti-Homosexuality Act – passed the previous year – which further criminalizes members of the LGBT community with the death penalty and sentences of up to life in prison, Human Rights Watch reported.

The death penalty would have been introduced for those convicted of “aggravated homosexuality”, described as repeated homosexual acts and sexual intercourse with a person under 18, over 75 or disabled.

Those found guilty of consensual homosexual relations now face life in prison, while those who attempt homosexual acts face sentences of 10 years in prison for a first offense under the legislation.

The law is “one of the harshest in the world restricting the rights of LGBT people,” Human Rights Watch said, noting that Ugandan authorities have also banned LGBT organizations, some of which are accused of “promoting homosexuality” and luring children into homosexuality through “forced recruitment.”

Ugandan judges also reportedly upheld provisions of the law providing for a sentence of up to 20 years in prison for “promoting homosexuality”.

Mamdani faced strong backlash over her apparent connection to Kadaga, with her campaign insisting she was unaware she was the “architect” of Uganda’s strict anti-LGBT law.
