Daines drops out of Senate reelection, hand-picked successor sneaks in before filing deadline

Sen. Steve Daines, Republican of Montana, abandoned his re-election bid Wednesday with virtually no time to spare before the state’s filing deadline, but just enough for his hand-picked successor to enter the race.
