Afzal plans to take another police-related job in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Dayton City Manager Shelley Dickstein confirmed the acceptance but noted the transition is not yet official as Afzal completes the hiring process in North Carolina.

Because the hiring process includes a background check and other administrative requirements, a formal written contract has not yet been signed.

Afzal was announced as Dayton’s police chief in October 2021 and was officially installed in December 2021.

When he was hired, he gave the City a five-year commitment. He served about four and a half years of that term.

A Dayton police union leader said Tuesday there has been no official communication from the city to the police department about the possible decision.

Efforts to reach Greensboro’s city manager were directed to a communications official, and the city is currently awaiting a response from North Carolina officials.

The city of Dayton has begun preparing the framework to find a replacement for Afzal.

“We have a good process that we use when we hire new leadership and we’re starting to put a framework around that, and we’ll be able to move forward as soon as we hear something official,” Dickstein said.
