“We all fell to the ground and crawled to the side of the building,” said Vasty Albino Velez, who was inside the DMV when the active shooter opened fire.

She said she dragged her son and his parents to safety as people trampled each other to get out.

“I look to my left and I see everyone towards us and they start pushing my mother to the ground,” she said.

Delaware State Police Superintendent Col. William Crotty said, “We have lost a brother, a son, a best friend, a coach, a husband and a father…His final actions were those of a hero, a hero who saved lives today while sacrificing his own.”

Heartbroken soldiers saluted in a procession as the body of the fallen soldier was moved from Christiana Hospital to the medical examiner’s office in Wilmington.
