Chicago Democrat mayor Brandon Johnson said on Tuesday that President Donald Trump criticizes his treatment of crime because he is “intimidated” by the “intellectual prowess of black men”.

A journalist asked the mayor at a press conference of his response to Trump calling Johnson and the Democratic Governor of Illinois JB Pritzker “incompetent” on their treatment of crime in Chicago. The mayor said Trump uses “small and childish” insults towards his crime management simply because he is “intimidated” by his management.

“The president has always been intimidated by the intellectual prowess of black men, and therefore of course, he spoke in these terms small and childish because he is small,” said Johnson. After Trump deployed the National Guard to Washington, he warned on Monday that the federal government could repair crime in other American cities like Chicago. He expressed the hope that his actions in Washington would influence other major cities to “self-clean”.

“I’m going to watch New York in a little while,” said Trump. “And if we need it, we will do the same in Chicago, which is a disaster.”

Johnson accused Trump of having propagated disinformation on crime rates to Chicago and that the sending of the National Guard “would only be used to destabilize [the] City “and” undermine “public security.

Pritzker rejected Trump’s insults by saying that he “will reject the criticisms” of someone who “went bankrupt six times” and who “cheat golf”.

“I reject criticism and I don’t really want to respond to Donald Trump’s criticism, who inherited his money and then went bankrupt six times, then defrauded his business partners. And by the way, he also cheats golf,” said Pritzker.

Pritzker and Johnson both argued that Trump would violate the American Constitution if he deployed the National Guard to Chicago.

There were 246 homicides in Chicago in August 8, or 110 incidents less compared to 2024, according to the Chicago Tribune. The total violent crime would have decreased by 22% in the first half of 2025 compared to the previous year.

In Washington, data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) show that violent crimes have only dropped by 10% since 2024, despite data from the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) indicating that violent crimes decreased by 26%. Statistics on MPD crime exclude aggravated and criminal assaults.

The MPD suspended its police commander in May and opened an investigation to find out if it has manipulated the data to make believe that crime has decreased at major prices. The Washington Police Union accused the MPD in July of falsifying crime statistics to exaggerate a decrease in violent crimes.
