Washington – As a possible federal closure, the Democratic leaders of the Congress require a meeting with President Donald Trump to negotiate the end of what they call “your decision” to close government offices if no action is taken by the end of the month.
Senator Chuck Schumer and representative Hakeem Jeffries said on Saturday that the Republicans, on Trump’s insistence, refused to participate in talks. Democrats are pushing to preserve health care programs in the context of any agreement to maintain the government before the financing date of September 30.
“We write to demand a meeting as part of your decision to close the federal government due to the republican desire to continue to empty the health care of the American people,” the two Democrats of New York wrote.
“The Democrats were clear and consistent in our position,” they said. “We are ready to work on a bipartite spending agreement that improves the life of American families and addresses the republican health care crisis.”
An official of the Trump administration, who was not authorized to comment on the question publicly and spoke under the cover of anonymity, was disdainful of the demand of the Democrats.
The congress, which is controlled by the Republicans, did not resolve the question of funding before the legislators left the city on Friday for a break.
The Chamber approved a republican proposal to maintain the federal government funded in November, but the measure failed in the Senate. A democratic proposal that has stimulated health care funds has also failed.
Everything leaves the congress and the White House without any easy way to get out of the dead end which threatens a closure in less than two weeks when the current budgetary year and the funding expires. Trump’s first term saw a closure of a month, the longest in federal history in 2018-2019.
Trump predicted on Friday that there could be “a country closed for a period of time”. He said the government would continue to “take care” of military and social security payments when closing.
The Republicans insisted that they are not to blame for a possible closure, which returns to the Democrats.
