The Justice Department is turning to former Trump lawyer Joeseph diGenova to lead an investigation into former CIA Director John Brennan and others into the origins of the Trump-Russia investigation as the department reshuffles leadership of the sprawling investigation.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche tapped diGenova to serve as legal counsel overseeing the case, according to a New York Times report, placing a former Trump lawyer in a key role in the high-profile investigation. A federal grand jury sitting in Miami has been impaneled since late last year.

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

DiGenova, a former U.S. attorney in Washington, D.C., who represented Trump during special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, has repeatedly accused Brennan of misconduct related to the origins of the Russia investigation — allegations that did not result in criminal charges.

He also said during a 2018 appearance on Fox News that Brennan colluded with the FBI and DOJ to frame Trump.

The origins of the Russia investigation have faced intense scrutiny from Trump’s allies, who have argued that intelligence and law enforcement launched the probe inappropriately.

DiGenova’s appointment follows the ouster of Maria Medetis Long, a national security prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office in South Florida. She had overseen the investigation, including an investigation into false statements linked to Brennan and broader investigations related to the conspiracy.

As the investigation continues, federal investigators have issued subpoenas seeking information related to intelligence assessments of Russian interference in the 2016 election.
