A dollar store at a busy Wilmington intersection recently closed its doors for good.

The manager of the Dollar Tree at 2606 Carolina Beach Road, located at the corner of the road and Shipyard Boulevard, confirmed the store went out of business on May 11. A sign at the entrance also notes the store is closed.

“This closing down of the store has been going (on) for a couple of weeks,” said the manager, who identified herself only as “Jo.”

New Hanover County property records show there is a proposed redevelopment of the 2.59-acre property for the construction of a convenience store for fuel sales. A commercial building permit application for the store was applied for on March 26 and is under review, according to the records.

Nine Dollar Tree stores remain in New Hanover County, although the company’s website still shows the 2606 Carolina Beach Road location as open.

Dollar Tree’s company roots go back to 1953 with the opening of a variety store in Norfolk, Virginia. According to its website, the company now operates more than 9,000 stores with 150,000 associates.
