Eric Swalwell to resign from Congress following sexual assault allegations

Rep. Eric Swalwell, Democrat of California, announced his resignation from Congress on Monday, following calls from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle for him to resign amid allegations of sexual assault and misconduct.

“I am aware of efforts to provoke an immediate expulsion vote against me and other members. Expelling someone from Congress without due process, within days of an allegation, is wrong. But it is also wrong for my constituents to distract me from my duties. Therefore, I intend to resign my seat in Congress,” Swalwell wrote in an article on X.

He did not specify when exactly he planned to resign, instead saying he would work with his staff to ensure he could “meet the needs of the good people of the 14th Congressional District.”

The news comes a day after Swalwell suspended his bid for governor of California. It also comes on the same day the House Ethics Committee announced it was launching an investigation into Swalwell.
