The biggest fighting game tournament is a little smaller this year — but still exciting
EVO 2025, the largest combat game tournament in North America is starting this weekend. If you connect to one of the nine different Evo Twitch channels Street-combatant And Tekkenand more recent games like King of Fighters: City of the WolvesAnd Rivals of Aether II. The fights begin today and last until the end of Sunday August 3. Although this year is smaller, with fewer participants than last year, there are still many reasons to watch.
There could be a number of explanations on this subject. Economic volatility motivated by inflation and politics has increased the cost of living. When people have to think twice between the grocery store and a trip to Vegas (where Evo is held every year), the trip to Vegas generally loses. Evo also widened, adding tournaments first to Japan, then in France, and now Singapore, giving international players more than one choice of events to attend.
Safety is potentially another reason why players remain away. Evo is an internationally known and recognized tournament, players around the world are competing for this event. But in the United States, immigration and customs application (ICE) have carried out raids across the country, apparently to stop immigrants for expulsion. But there have been many reports that legal residents, American citizens and even tourists with valid visas are arrested and held for months or even illegally expelled. In an email at The penisErica Johnson, communications director of Las Vegas Convention Center, wrote: “LVCVA policy is to respect all federal, state and local laws and to cooperate with their legal execution.” Evo did not respond to requests for comments.
Some notable international players, however, have decided to brave the crossing of the American border. Arslan “Arslan Ash” siddique of Pakistan is registered to attend Evo, returning again to compete for another Tekken Championship. Matías “Scorpionprocs” Martínez and Nicolás “Nicolas” Martínez, Chilean twins known for having dominated Komba MortelT tournaments will also be in competition.
The games themselves could also contribute to reducing the participation rate. Tekken 8 has the second largest number of participants after Street Fighter VIBut the second season of the game was so badly received by the players that Tekken’s executive producer, Katsuhiro Harada, wrote: “I personally do not think that this jack is unjustified.” This frustration with the game may have led its number of players to be reduced by two from 4,646 players in 2024 to only 2,521 this year.
