EU Melts Down After Rubio Sanctions Foreign Agents Who Colluded With Big Tech to Censor Americans – RedState

Well, it’s rich.
The European Union (EU) has officially responded to U.S. sanctions on five foreign agents who colluded with big tech to censor Americans, and boy, is that something else. After condemning the United States for taking such measures, the EU then poetically explained that “freedom of expression is a fundamental right in Europe” and infamously proclaimed that it considered it a “shared fundamental value” with the United States.
They seem very disappointed with the United States, don’t they?
As RedState reported Tuesday, the Trump administration imposed sanctions on five foreigners, mostly from Europe, who worked alongside the Biden administration and U.S.-based NGOs to pressure tech companies to stifle free speech.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio, in announcing the sanctions, said the actions of the five created “potentially serious negative foreign policy consequences” and called the coordinated effort “global industrial and censorship complex. » The five culprits are now barred from entering the United States, and those who may currently be there may be immediately deported by the State Department.

Among the five people sanctioned are a former European Union commissioner and leaders of non-governmental organizations based in Europe whose mission is to combat “digital hate”. They are accused of using European censorship laws and taxpayer-funded NGOs to pressure US tech platforms to silence legal US speech, including threatening
Let’s take a look at the full statement released by the EU on Wednesday:
The European Commission strongly condemns the US decision to impose travel restrictions on five European nationals, including former European Commissioner Thierry Breton.
Freedom of expression is a fundamental right in Europe and a fundamental value shared with the United States in the democratic world.
The EU is an open, rules-based single market with the sovereign right to regulate economic activity in line with our democratic values and international commitments.
Our digital rules ensure a safe, fair and level playing field for all businesses, applied fairly and without discrimination.
We have requested clarification from US authorities and remain engaged.
If necessary, we will respond quickly and decisively to defend our regulatory autonomy against unjustified measures.
Do these people listen to themselves? Europeans, as the EU’s wild stance shows, seem to be the only ones who think they cherish free speech. The rest of us know different.
They have been warned. Vice President JD Vance made headlines around the world in February, just weeks after Inauguration Day, when he gave a speech in Germany at the annual Munich Security Conference and criticized Europe for its increasingly poor record on free speech.
In his speech, Vance denounced “EU commissioners” who “warn citizens that they intend to shut down social media during times of civil unrest”, and specifically targeted Sweden for jailing a Christian activist who burned a Quran and the United Kingdom for condemning a pro-life activist for praying in her head outside an abortion clinic.
Vance alerted European leaders in this speech, telling them: “In Washington, there’s a new sheriff in town.” And, indeed, the days when the actions of our “allies” were unquestioned are over (for now at least). We take the First Amendment very seriously on these points, and the EU would do well to remember this when considering changes to it.
