Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is challenging Republican Sen. John Cornyn for one of the state’s U.S. Senate seats, has accepted significant contributions from trial lawyers with ties to Democrats, according to data reviewed by the Daily Caller.

A number of attorneys supporting Paxton’s U.S. Senate campaign have also supported prominent Democratic candidates in recent years, including Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar. According to campaign finance data, Paxton received about $230,000, which represents about 10 percent of the total money Paxton raised. Of that sum, Democratic Party-aligned personal injury attorney Muhammad Aziz contributed nearly a third, with a total contribution of $93,000. Aziz, according to at The Texas Voice, is a longtime Democratic Party donor who recently expressed interest in swaying the Republican primaries in an anti-Trump direction.

The Texas media outlet further specifies that Aziz is one of Rep. Omar’s major political donors. Omar — who has been accused of facilitating immigration fraud by entering into a fake marriage with her Somali brother — is one of President Donald Trump’s most vocal critics on Capitol Hill. The pairing of Paxton — who has positioned himself as a staunch ally of the president — and Aziz could be seen as troubling by Texas voters. Aziz – a partner at the Houston-based law firm Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Agosto, Aziz & Stogner – is a major player in Texas Democratic politics. According to The Texas Voice, Aziz has provided significant resources to the Harris County Democratic Party, the Democratic National Committee (DNC), Joe Biden’s presidential campaign and former Democratic Senate candidate Collin Allred.

Aziz’s law firm also contributed $300,000 to the anti-Republican First Tuesday PAC, which also received significant resources from George Soros. During the 2024 election cycle, the PAC encouraged voters to “Stop MAGA Republicans.” The law firm has already contributed an additional $300,000 to the First Tuesday PAC in the 2026 election cycle, according to The Texas Voice.

Sources in Texas, however, told the Daily Caller that the trial lawyers’ alignment with Paxton stemmed from an ongoing political fight over prosecutorial reform in the state. The dispute, according to sources, stems from the damages cap successfully won by Texans for Lawsuit Reform (TLR). These caps have significantly reduced awards in litigation, such as malpractice suits, which many lawyers say have made such suits unfeasible. One source insists that Aziz and other litigators’ alignment with Paxton stems entirely from LRT reforms, with the latter having significant influence with Senator Cornyn and the Bush family.
