A recall is underway for peanut butter sold in 40 states, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Ventura Foods LLC initially recalled the products last April after discovering pieces of blue plastic in a production filter. On February 12, the FDA assigned the recall the second highest risk level, Class II, because the foreign materials pose a safety risk if consumed.

The recall involves three peanut butter products with the following information:

  • Creamy peanut butter in 0.5 oz, 0.75 oz and 1.12 oz packages
  • Creamy Peanut Butter with Grape Jelly in 2.12 ounce packages
  • Creamy peanut butter with strawberry jam in 2.12 ounce packages

The products were sold under several different brands, including Gordon Food Service, US Foods and Sysco House Recipe. A complete list of brands and lot codes is available in the FDA report.

The recalled peanut butter was distributed to the following countries: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

The FDA has not provided specific instructions, but as a Class II recall, the safest option is not to consume the affected products. Consider throwing small packets of peanut butter into your pantry if you don’t know where they come from.
