Final Spirit Airlines flight ever flew out of Detroit Metro Airport

Thirty-four years of Spirit Airlines came to an end with flight NK1833 from Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport in Texas, according to a Spirit Airlines spokesperson.

The last passengers to fly with Spirit departed from Detroit Metropolitan Airport around 10 p.m. on Friday, May 1, and landed at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport a few minutes after midnight on Saturday, May 2, according to a flight tracker.

Spirit announced the suspension of its operations early in the morning of Saturday, May 2. All flights have been canceled and customer service is no longer available.

During the last day of operations, the airline transported more than 50,000 passengers, according to the press release, and 17,000 direct and indirect employees lost their jobs.

Spirit will automatically refund all flights purchased through Spirit with a credit or debit card to the original payment method, according to the press release. Passengers who booked through a travel agency must contact the travel agency directly for reimbursement. Compensation for passengers who booked through other methods, including a voucher, credit or Free Spirit points, will be determined later as part of the bankruptcy process.

On Saturday morning, the airline’s counter in the Evans Terminal at Detroit Metropolitan Airport was empty except for journalists filming the scene. Travelers from other airlines walked through the empty area to check in.
