Fish use more energy to stay still than previously thought

Many fish appear to dangle effortlessly in the water while waiting for prey, defending a nest, or taking a break between bursts of activity. But our research shows that this quiet tranquility is anything but easy. Hovering, the behavior that allows a fish to remain suspended in one place, is much more energy demanding than scientists once thought.
