Florence Welch says she had life-saving surgery after ectopic pregnancy

Singer Florence Welch revealed that she had vital emergency surgery after undergoing an extra-uterine pregnancy in August 2023.

The Grammys candidate told the Guardian that she suffered unconsciously from serious internal bleeding while performing on stage during a festival, telling the newspaper that her pregnancy was “the closest I went”.

It was diagnosed with a tube of broken fallow after having undergone a miscarriage, which required surgery “within an hour”.

At the time, Welch, 39, canceled planned concerts, telling the fans she did for “reasons that I don’t really feel strong enough to enter”.

She told the Guardian that she had been devastated after suffering a miscarriage but that she was informed by a doctor that she could honor her performance calendar.

On the day of a big titles show in Cornwall, Welch said that she did not feel well but that she had been able to finish her set as planned.

However, the singer said that a scan shortly after revealed that there was “a coke blood value in my abdomen”.

She was told that she should immediately suffer an emergency surgery to have her fallopian tube removed.

According to the NHS, one in 90 pregnancies in the United Kingdom is ectopic and occurs when a fertilized egg is involved outside the uterus.

Symptoms for women usually start between four and 12 weeks and may include low pain on one side of the abdomen and pain at the tip of the shoulder.

If not diagnosed, the fallow tube can burst, leading to potentially deadly internal bleeding. In these circumstances, immediate surgery to repair or remove the organ is necessary.

Welch, who performs with Florence and The Machine, is expected to release a new album, Everybody Scream, in October.
