The first men’s cycling Grand Tour of the season gets underway on Friday as 200 of the world’s top riders battle it out for the Maglia Rosa in the 109th edition of the Giro d’Italia.
With last year’s winner Simon Yates having retired and 2024 champion Tadej Pogačar absent, Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard is widely seen as this year’s favorite. The 29-year-old Team Visma star is making his Giro d’Italia debut this year. With a win, he’ll be the first man to take all three Grand Tours since Chris Froome in 2018.
Italian youngster Giulio Pellizzari is also in contention for home turf glory, having impressed in last year’s event, while his Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe teammate, Jai Hindley, is in a good place to repeat his heroics in 2022 and claim the crown for a second time.
This year’s race gets underway with a stage in Bulgaria for the first time. The 2026 event kicks off with a 156-kilometer opener from Nessebar to Burgas. The peloton will eventually arrive in Rome on May 31 for the 21st and final stage.
A full schedule for this year’s event can be found at the foot of this article.
This year’s Giro d’Italia will follow the recent tradition of a final stage in Rome which takes in several iconic landmarks, including the Colosseum.
