Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick has reportedly raised the possibility of adding funding for Ukraine to the $200 billion the Pentagon is requesting from Congress for the war in Iran.

Fitzpatrick told reporters he was having discussions with his House colleagues about setting aside funds to support Ukraine during its war with Russia — in addition to the $200 billion the Trump administration’s War Department is seeking in additional funding to finance Operation Epic Fury, according to a report published Thursday X by Puck News chief Washington correspondent Leigh Ann Caldwell. The moderate Republican lawmaker co-chairs the Congressional Ukraine Caucus and is known as one of the strongest supporters of aid to wartime Ukraine in the House Republican Conference. Fitzpatrick’s office did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

War Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the Pentagon’s $200 billion request for Iran to Daily Caller White House correspondent Reagan Reese on Thursday, saying the request is in part necessary to ensure that U.S. munitions used in Operation Epic Fury are properly restocked.

“Up to $200 billion, I think that number could move,” Hegseth told Reese. “Obviously it takes money to kill the bad guys, so we’re looking to Congress and our people there to make sure that we’re properly funded for what’s been done, for what we may need to do in the future, to make sure that our ammo is, that everything is reloaded, and not just reloaded, but beyond that.”

Hegseth also told Reese that former President Joe Biden’s administration depleted U.S. military stockpiles while supporting Ukraine in its own war effort.

“I think, you know, we’re also still dealing with the environment created by Joe Biden, who depleted those stockpiles and sent them not to our own military, but to Ukraine, and that’s when – every time we go back and look at any type of challenge that we have, it comes down to, well, sending it to Ukraine,” the War Secretary said.

By the end of February, Congress had allocated $188 billion – roughly the same amount as the Pentagon’s current request from Iran – for the war in Ukraine, the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) reported at the time, citing the US special inspector general in charge of Operation Atlantic Resolve.

Congress has passed five bills providing billions in aid to the Eastern European country since its invasion by Russia in February 2022, when Biden was in the White House, according to the CFR. Fitzpatrick has consistently voted in favor of sending funds to Ukraine.

While running for office in 2024, President Donald Trump pledged to broker peace between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin “within 24 hours.” However, those negotiations have largely stalled and the two countries remain at war, 14 months into Trump’s second term.

Fitzpatrick represents Pennsylvania’s First District, a swing seat in suburban Philadelphia that Vice President Kamala Harris won by 0.3 percentage points in 2024, making him one of three House Republicans elected that year in districts that voted blue at the top of the ticket.

The lawmaker is among several dozen people targeted for defeat by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in November. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report calls his race “probably Republican.”
