A Canadian tourist was shot and killed Monday while visiting the Teotihuacán pyramids in Mexico, according to local authorities.

Mexican security officials said a gunman opened fire at the popular tourist spot, killing a Canadian woman and wounding at least 13 people, including six Americans. The shooter then committed suicide, the Security Cabinet said.

In a video posted on X, verified by CBS News, a man armed with a gun is seen walking near the top of the Pyramid of the Moon. In another video, gunshots can be heard as visitors to the archaeological site walk at the base of the pyramid.

At least seven people were shot and at least two people were injured in falls, officials said. Two of those shot, a 29-year-old man and a 61-year-old woman, were American. Eight people were still hospitalized Monday evening, the Mexican Interior Ministry said.

Mexico’s security cabinet said a gun, a bladed weapon and ammunition were found at the scene.

“What happened today in Teotihuacán pains us deeply,” Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said in a statement on Monday. “I express my most sincere solidarity with those affected and their families.”

Mexican authorities are in contact with the Canadian embassy regarding the incident, Sheinbaum said.

The Teotihuacán Pyramids are located 30 miles north of Mexico City. The pyramids are one of the most important and visited archaeological sites in Mexico, with millions of tourists coming every year.
