Hassett says Trump administration preparing big plan to address housing

White House Economic Director Kevin Hassett said Sunday that the Trump administration is taking a comprehensive approach to combating the housing affordability crisis.
“Everyone in the Cabinet is working to make housing more affordable,” Hassett told “Fox News Sunday.”
He said the administration is preparing a sweeping proposal to ease the burden on homebuyers, details of which are expected early in the new year.

“We’re going to have a plan, a big plan, to announce soon in the new year, that will be very good news for the American people who feel like it’s no longer affordable to buy a home,” Hassett added.
He also said Cabinet officials planned to meet with the President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago in the days following Christmas to present and review policy proposals.
“We have a long list of housing ideas that have been carefully reviewed by Cabinet secretaries that we are going to present to the president in a week or two and see which ones he chooses,” he added.

The administration’s move comes as housing affordability has become a political liability for Trump and a winning issue for Democrats.
According to a Fox News National Investigation76% of voters evaluate the economy negatively, compared to 67% in July and 70% at the end of the former president. That of Joe Biden mandate. Voters largely blame Trump for the economic downturn, with about twice as many people holding him responsible for the current economy as Biden, and three times as many saying his policies have harmed them personally.

At the same time, approval of Trump’s handling of the economy has fallen to a new low, while disapproval of his overall job performance has reached record levels, even among some of his core supporters.
Meanwhile, Democrats leaned heavily on themes of affordability in state and local elections this fall, and it paid off.
In places like Virginia, New York and New Jersey, where voters were pressured by high pressure housing costs and utility bills, Democratic candidates used Trump’s early economic moves, including his trade policies, to argue that his policies were worsening the affordability crisis rather than alleviating it.

They promised to reduce energy costs, promote affordable housing and preserve middle-class wages. The message struck a chord with voters and underscores a broader reality: When many are feeling financially strained, the party that is most vocal about financial concerns often wins.

Although Hassett declined to detail the proposals, the administration has previously discussed loosening zoning restrictions and expanding long-term mortgage products.
The challenge for Trump will be to translate these ideas into relief for voters who increasingly wonder whether his affordability promises are being kept.
