The Texas A&M Board of Regents voted Thursday to require professors to seek approval from the university president to teach courses on “racial or gender ideology or topics related to sexual orientation or gender identity.”

The board also said faculty must “adhere to the approved curriculum for each course” and cannot venture into “unrelated topics or instructional materials inconsistent with the approved curriculum,” according to a board announcement. The change will apply to all 12 universities in the A&M system and is intended to help “restore public confidence in higher education.” (RELATED: ‘It’s What Motivates People’: School Board Winners Say Gender Policies Generated Big Electoral Gains)

In September, a video recorded during a Texas A&M children’s literature class went viral after a student was kicked out of class for objecting to a lesson on “gender and sexuality.” The course professor was subsequently fired and two senior staff were removed from their positions. The university president resigned shortly afterward.

The Trump administration announced on January 20 that it was adopting the biological definition of male and female and further prohibited schools from “transmitting un-American, subversive, harmful, and false ideologies to our nation’s children,” including the teaching of gender ideology. Texas also has a statewide ban on diversity, equity and inclusion policies at higher education institutions.

“Transparency and accountability are essential to our mission. We honor this commitment and build confidence in the quality of A&M education in Texas,” Glenn Hegar, chancellor of the A&M System, said in the announcement. “This effort is really about ensuring a balance between academic freedom and academic responsibility.”
