How Caitlin Clark, WNBA’s Fever beat Paige Bueckers’ Wings

Indiana fever was in great shape on Sunday. And consequently, the first professional match between Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers was not even close. Although Bueckers scored a summit of 21 points, the fever equaled its high season with a 102-83 victory against the wings of Dallas.

The fever led by a point after the first period but struck another equipment in the second quarter, by ahead of the Wings 36-15. The 64 points of the fever in the first half were a franchise record for most points in half. The 64 points in Indiana are the largest team that has scored in half of this season, according to ESPN Research.

Clark, who missed nine games this season due to an injury, finished with 14 points and 13 assists. It was his 17th career match with at least 10 assists, but first with more than 10 assists and two reversals or less.

Kelsey Mitchell led Indiana with 20 points out of 67% shooting (8 out of 12). The fever has placed five players in two -digit scores, raised 29 assists (one less of their deductible record) and 58 points in painting, their most in a match this season.

The two teams meet again on August 1 in Dallas, a match which was recently transferred to the American Airlines Center. In the first match of Dallas and Indiana this season, Clark did not play due to a problem with the left groin. But that did not prevent the fever from beating the Wings 94-86 despite 27 drum points and six assists.

What does this victory for Indiana mean? The fever (11-10) puts an end to their five-game house on a positive note with consecutive victories on the dream of Atlanta and the wings of Dallas. For a team that recently deplored its lack of consistency, the group must be satisfied with the way it has not left its foot on the gas against the six wings. The offensive production has been particularly impressive, with 201 points recorded in the last two games. Coach Stephanie White has spoken of the importance of stacking games like this, so the test will now be to finish the Slate Pre-All Strong Strong-the fever plays at Connecticut Sun on Tuesday and the New York Liberty on Wednesday-and get several games above 0.500 for the first time this season.

What does the game mean for the wings? The wings must understand their defense. It was difficult to look at the way they were constantly beaten in transition, especially in the second quarter, by the offense of fever. The defense was an Achille heel for Dallas this season, but coach Chris Koclanes hoped that his team would come out more intensity at the end of the floor after abandoning big nights to Sami Whitcomb and Rebecca Allen. The opposite occurred in the second quarter, where Indiana made a 25-4 race which essentially decided the match.

Will Arike Ogunbowale find a groove this season? She was 0 for 10 on the field in her first return game of an injury to the thumb, but she had trouble joining the offensive before even lacking time. It will be interesting to see how the rotations in the Koclanes rear area evolve as the season progresses, the Aziaha James and JJ Recruits have seen roles extended in recent weeks.

How did Clark and Bueckers play? Clark was proud of how she succeeded in Friday’s match against Atlanta (12 points, 9 assists) and she has only one embarrassed this Sunday with an effort of 14 points and 13 dimans, good for her fifth double-double of the season and the 19th of her career. Its shooting is still not as effective as it would like (4-on-12 on the field, 2-in-7 of 3), but Clark reiterated that it was trying to remain confident in its capacities and in the work which it put. Another positive positive: Clark made his defensive presence felt with a team of five best flights.

Bueckers led all scorers with 21 points on a 9th shooting for 15 (2-in-4 of 3), his 17th consecutive double-digit match to start his career. Only three other players in the history of the League – A’ja Wilson (2018), Candace Parker (2008) and Natalie Williams (1999) – had such longer sequences. The turnover was a bit of a problem for Bueckers (four, tied at the top of his career) and the rest of the wings (18), which led the fever to prosper in transitional offense. – Alexa Philippou
