How low will the temps go?

SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) – Lots of cold air is about to close out the week. Meteorologist Adam Rutt looks at how cold it can get.
We’ve been talking about this next blast of arctic air for a while, with highs on Friday unlikely to go above zero in many places. This is going to be difficult enough, but the lows of the night should not be overlooked.

We will be below freezing many times, but how low can we go?
Here’s a look at some all-time records for the month of January. Outside of Winner and Yankton, which are nothing ridiculous in their own right at twenty-eight and twenty-nine degrees below zero respectively, all of our record lows are at least thirty degrees below zero…with a few places posting record lows at forty below and lower.
It’s also worth noting that these recordings took place at different times of the month. Some were in early January, while a few snuck in just before February took over.
We will see the floodgates open on Thursday with the passage of a front on Wednesday evening. Thursday’s highs will likely be reached shortly after midnight, as temperatures drop throughout the day and settle well below freezing.
Once there, we will be there until at least Friday evening, with some places remaining below freezing on Saturday as well.
West River locations will experience milder temperatures by Sunday through next Monday as the 30s and 40s return.
In the east, the process will be slower… although we are at least above freezing daytime with some margin by Sunday.
