How to Apply Lash Serum for Longer, Healthier Eyelashes
If there’s one thing I’ve been constantly complimented on over the past year, it’s my lashes. And once you learn how to apply eyelash serum, you’ll get the same benefits.
I can’t count the number of times people have asked me, “Are those your real lashes?” or “Do you wear false eyelashes to the office?!” – and I have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to access control.

What are eyelash serums and how do they work?
“Eyelash serums are topical treatments applied to your eyelashes to enhance their natural growth,” explains Dr Amy Vowler, hair restoration doctor at Hair GP. “They do this by nourishing the eyelash follicle and stimulating dormant follicles, encouraging them to produce stronger hairs. Eyelash serums create lasting change by prolonging the hair growth phase, leading to gradually but semi-permanently thicker and longer eyelashes.”
Dr. Vowler explains that cosmetic grade eyelash serums, those readily available, are peptide-based and contain ingredients such as amino acids, botanical extracts and vitamins. They reduce breakage and make lashes fuller and shinier, but they do not directly change the lash cycle.
“The growth phase of an eyelash is shorter than that of the hair on your scalp and only lasts 30 to 45 days before they need to be replaced,” she explains. “With consistent use of eyelash serum, most people notice improvement within 6 to 12 weeks, but because you are not changing your eyelash cycle, you will notice your lashes gradually returning to their old pattern once you stop using the serum.”
Are there any key ingredients to look out for?
Not all eyelash serums are made the same, but because the market has become so saturated, it can be difficult to know which one to choose.
“The ones to look for are those that contain ingredients that nourish and strengthen lashes by improving follicle health and the condition of the hair shaft,” says Dr. Vowler. These include:
- Peptide (e.g. Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17): Signals proteins that support keratin production
- Panthenol (vitamin B5): Moisturizes and strengthens the eyelash shaft
- Hyaluronic acid: Moisturizes eyelashes and prevents breakage
- Amino acids (argine): Promotes blood flow to the root of the follicle
- Plant extracts, such as pumpkin seeds or green tea: Provides antioxidants and mild follicular stimulation
My must-have eyelash serum
I’ve tried a few eyelash serums that landed on my desk, but none delivered results as fast and effective as the Revitalash Advanced Eyelash Serum. “A consistent routine is key to achieving optimal results,” says Claire Larsen, Global Master Educator at Revitalash. “For best results, we recommend applying once a day or night. Don’t waste your money: using it more than once a day will not give ‘better’ or faster results. Apply a thin line directly to your clean, dry lashes, above the lash line only, avoiding applying lower lashes.”
