The Cincinnati Bengals seemed to understand that early in the season things could go wrong for the defense, at least momentarily, while they announced new names.

But the youth movement, surrounded by much the same thing as last year, has produced historically bad results.

This is not an exaggeration either.

The Bengals defense coordinated by Al Golden now ranks among the worst of all time in DVOA, as Aaron Schatz illustrates:

It is also difficult to see how things will improve. The Bengals then obtain nine victories in New England. They still see Lamar Jackson twice. They get Josh Allen. And as chaotic as the situation may be there, they endure Miami’s sometimes explosive offense. That makes five of their seven games remaining.

The Bengals also don’t exactly have the personnel to make roster moves. Rookie Shemar Stewart is on injured reserve. Trey Hendrickson is injured. They torched the Earth at linebacker and have no one else to turn to, plus they never attempted to improve the safety position last year.
