I asked new A24 movie Eternity’s director for the perfect double-bill recommendation – and you can stream his pick for free

New A24 film Eternity redefined romantic comedy for the 2020s and broke hearts in the process. Basically, Joan (Elizabeth Olsen) must decide whether she wants to spend the afterlife with her first husband Luke (Callum Turner), who died during the Korean War, or her second husband Larry (Miles Teller), with whom she spent 65 years.
If you think you can guess the ending, I guarantee you can’t (and if I’m honest, I don’t really agree with that). But with so many Easter eggs and cultural references sprinkled throughout the film, there’s sure to be something that sticks out to you while you watch.
Watch The Apartment after Eternity, says director David Freyne
Look on it
“I think one of my biggest tonal references would have been The Apartment by Billy Wilder,” he told me. “So I would say that, but actually, I’m saying that now and I don’t know if I want to be so immediately compared to him.”
Either way, it’s a phenomenal choice. Along with Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine, CC Baxter (Lemmon) expands his apartment to allow his colleagues to have adventures away from their family home. He soon falls in love with Fran (MacLaine), an elevator girl, which complicates his work arrangements and relationships.
Considering how many complex romances and exceptional performances there are in The ApartmentI understand why Freyne chose him. Frankly, this is a film that any filmmaker would aspire to be half as good at, and as a viewer you come away with a new mindset every time you watch it.
There is also good news. The Apartment is currently available to stream for free in the US on Kanopy, Hoopla and Plex, with free trials available for Fubo TV and MGM+ via Prime Video. In fact, take a look at the deal below:
You can use the offer above to watch The Apartment for free in the UK, while Australian fans will have to head to Apple TV.
But Freyne isn’t done there. “What I would say is Hamnet. See Hamnetso go see ours as a hunt, as a little dessert. Both are very moving, but one will make you cry sad tears and the other will make you cry happy tears.
“So make this a double bill. Let’s move on to Chloe Zhao, see if she’s up for it.”
Since its distributor Focus Features is owned by Universal, there’s a good chance that Hamnet will debut streaming on Peacock next year. However, nothing is confirmed… which is even better since I can’t experience all this emotion in one day.
If you ask me, I think perfect dual programming with Eternity is The Truman Show. Different results, but both constructed in versions of a place that doesn’t actually exist, including the artificial sky.
Lucky for you, US fans can find The Truman Show and The Apartment in all the streaming locations I mentioned above, while UK fans will need Prime Video and Australian fans can look to Paramount+.
