‘Stranger Things’ fans are furious about the finale. Here’s why.

Stranger Things has finally come to an end, with the series finale streaming on New Year’s Eve on Netflix. However, reactions to Stranger ThingsThe grand finale was a mixed bag, with many left dissatisfied with how the popular series finally concluded.

Season 5 revealed Vecna’s (Jamie Campbell Bower) grand plan to merge Hawkins’ dimension with an alternate dimension called the Abyss, revealing the true nature of the Upside Down as a wormhole connecting the two. In “Chapter Eight: The Rightside Up”, the group ventured into the Abyss to confront him and the Mind Flayer in a dramatic final battle, ultimately emerging victorious thanks to their combined efforts (and projectile weapons).

Yet while most of the group returned to Hawkins relatively unscathed, not all made it. Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) failed to return to Hawkins with her friends, deliberately choosing to stay behind and sacrifice herself to ensure that her blood could not be used to restart the Hawkins Lab’s human experimentation program. Although Mike (Finn Wolfhard) offers a theory on how she may have secretly survived, Stranger Things ultimately leaves Eleven’s fate ambiguous.

“There are two routes that Eleven could take,” Matt Duffer said in an interview with Netflix. “There’s the one who’s more gloomy and pessimistic, or the one who’s optimistic and hopeful. Mike is the optimist of the group and chose to believe in this story.”

“There was never a version of the story where Eleven was hanging out with the gang at the end,” admitted Ross Duffer. “For us and our writers, we didn’t want to take away her powers. She represents magic in many ways and the magic of childhood. In order for our characters to move forward and the story of Hawkins and the Upside Down to end, Eleven had to go. We thought it would be beautiful if our characters continued to believe in this happier ending even if we didn’t give them a clear answer as to whether it was true or not.”

Despite the Duffer brothers’ reasoning, Eleven’s fate upset many viewers who were hoping for an unequivocally happy ending. Online reactions to Stranger ThingsThe finale was largely negative, with fans expressing frustration with the ending they were given.

Eleven’s fate wasn’t the only problem fans were having Stranger Things‘final either. Many viewers also felt that the final battle was disappointing and that the series’ conclusion failed to reward the characters for their efforts in past seasons – nor the viewers for their loyalty.

Some fans have further speculated that Stranger ThingsThe actors may be just as dissatisfied with the ending as its viewers. In a popular X post, Stranger Things The X fan account @stonetflix compared Brown’s seemingly concerned reaction when asked about the ending before it aired to that of actress Emilia Clarke responding to a similar question about the ending. Although the widespread feeling is that Stranger Things“The ending was nowhere near as bad as Game of Thrones“, the fact that a parallel is established is not a good sign.

Fortunately, although many reactions to Stranger ThingsThe finals were negative, not everyone was disappointed. Although they are in the minority, a few fans have expressed their satisfaction with the end of the series and their appreciation for what it was.

“A lot of the finale is about growing up,” Matt said, discussing Eleven’s ultimate choice. “It’s the end of a long coming-of-age story and part of coming-of-age is leaving your parents and making your own decisions. It’s the moment where Eleven reaches that point and Hopper realizes he has to let go.”
