Internal Polling From Jay Jones’s Campaign Confirms the Crap Has Hit the Fan – RedState

It was clear from the announcement of the Jay Jones text message scandal last Friday that he and his fellow Democrats at the national and state levels were going to handle this very poorly.
Not only did he not initially apologize, but candidates like Virginia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger refused to demand he drop out of the race for Virginia attorney general. Some of them – incredibly – even suggested that the way Jones handled revelations that he once fantasized about killing a former Republican colleague with “two bullets to the head” made him a role model for others supposedly in similar situations.
“You know, Jay apologized. The statements he made were indefensible, but I’ve known Jay Jones for 25 years, and I think those statements were out of character for him,” Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) suggested Wednesday. “I wish other people in public life would sincerely apologize for things. So no, I’m still a supporter.”
Amazing.
Senator Tim Kaine not only supports Jay Jones, he wishes more politicians could learn from Jones:

And now, amid growing pressure from Republicans, including President Trump and Vice President Vance, as well as prominent groups like the Virginia Fraternal Order of Police, to step down, and as allegations of other sickening claims about the deaths of political opponents continue, there’s more bad news for Jay Jones – and it comes from an internal poll released Wednesday:

Where the texting scandal hurt Jones the most is among independent voters, as the Hart Research note notes:

Independents

Internal polls released by campaigns and their pollsters are known to often show that their candidate is in a stronger position in the race than they actually are, meaning that Jones is, in reality, likely behind at this point in the race, similar to McAuliffe’s 2021 implosion. Something similar also appears to be playing out in the New Jersey gubernatorial race between Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) and former New Jersey State Rep. Jack Ciattarelli (R), as we previously reported:
If an internal poll has Sherrill up 7, then it probably looks more like a 3-point race 👀 https://t.co/tRSdZyMXuV

The debate in Virginia’s attorney general race, which will take place at the University of Richmond, is scheduled for Oct. 16, and all indications are that Jones will still show up for the debate even though he has canceled some other campaign appearances, including a fundraiser, in light of the scandal. We’ll be sure to talk about it, so stay tuned.
