Iowa Dems Break GOP Supermajority With Special Election Win
The Democrats won on Tuesday a special victory in the elections in Iowa, overthrowing a headquarters of the State Senate held by the Republicans and breaking the supermajority of the GOP in the upper room.
Democrat Catelin Drey beat the Republican Christopher Prosch to replace the deceased senator from the Rocky Republican State of Witt, who died in June. Drey Won 55% of the vote in a district that President Donald Trump carried 11 points In the November elections, according to the unofficial results of the Woodbury County auditor’s office.

Tuesday’s election results leave Iowa’s state Senate with 33 Republicans and 17 Democrats. Without a supermajority of the GOP, the democrats of the upper chamber will have the capacity to block the appointments of the republican governor Kim Reynolds for state agencies, councils and commissions.
Drey will serve the rest of the Witt’s mandate until January 2027. Headquarters will be in place again for the mid-term elections in November next year.
This marks the second time this year that the Democrats of Iowa have overturned a seat of the State Senate under republican control. In January, Democrat Mike Zimmer beat Republican Katie Whittington in another special election. The two victories occurred in the districts that Trump carried comfortably in the presidential election of 2024, in a state that the president won 13 points.
The Democrats supervised Tuesday’s results as proof that the Republicans lose ground in the state of Hawkeye.
“The iowans see the Republicans for whom they are: selfish liars who will throw their voters under the bus to stamp the disastrous program of Donald Trump – and they are ready to change”, President of the National Democratic Committee, President of the National Democratic Committee Ken Martin said, according to Fox 5 DC.
The president of Iowa Gop, Jeff Kaufmann, however minimized the results.
