Jimmy Kimmel’s Christmas Lecture on Tyranny Rings Hollow – RedState

Jimmy Kimmel chose Christmas Day to deliver Britain’s alternative Christmas message on Channel 4, a slot traditionally reserved for counterpoints to the King’s speech. There, the late-night host declared that “tyranny is on the rise” in America under President Donald Trump, describing the United States as sliding toward fascism while portraying Trump as a potential king. Kimmel’s remarks were accompanied by a dose of sarcasm.

He joked about his own brief suspension from ABC earlier this year, calling the public backlash a victory for free speech in a supposedly oppressive nation. He even directly taunted Trump, implying that the president’s complaints about late-night comedy had backfired by keeping his show on the air. The irony is so thick that it is impossible to miss. Kimmel is broadcasting from a country where free speech remains strong, even for the president’s staunch critics.

Late-night hosts like Kimmel, Stephen Colbert, Seth Myers and Jon Stewart have spent years targeting Trump without facing government censorship or legal repercussions for their monologues. Political speech, no matter how aggressive – and sometimes cruel and hateful – enjoys strong protection under the First Amendment.

Compare that with the nation hosting Kimmel’s message. In the UK, police make thousands of arrests each year for online communications deemed extremely offensive or threatening under laws such as the Malicious Communications Act (1988) and the Communications Act (2003).

Reports from 2024 and 2025 show that law enforcement has made more than 12,000 such arrests in recent years, often for social media posts that cause “anxiety” or offend sensitivities. High-profile cases include comedy writer Graham Linehan, arrested for tweets, and others cautioned for memes or critical comments. British authorities have defended the actions by saying they enforce existing laws, but critics across the political spectrum say they inhibit open debate. On the other hand, America’s First Amendment gives strong protection to speech – even speech that many people find offensive, hateful, or downright shocking.

And that’s why you don’t see statistical data on “speech arrests” in America – there’s no national tally because they’re so rare. When people get arrested for online comments, it’s usually for reasons like repeated harassment, stalking, or actual terrorist threats, not just for having a bad opinion or a mean tweet.

When citizens risk arrest for a harshly worded message, warnings of tyranny from abroad carry less weight. Kimmel’s schedule allows him to mock the president every night, renew his contract until 2027 and give international speeches denouncing authoritarianism. Americans elected Trump twice, and the system worked despite challenges, including intense scrutiny from the largely left-wing media. Additionally, no American comedian like Kimmel has been arrested for monologues or tweets – his brief corporate suspension was overturned amid backlash. On the contrary, the United Kingdom exemplifies the kind of police talk that Kimmel denounces, making his lecture to the British ring hollow.

Celebrity complaints about election results do not amount to tyranny; they reflect a healthy, if controversial, constitutional republic. If Kimmel is truly concerned about the erosion of freedoms, he might take a closer look at examples of speech policing in the United Kingdom. Here, the actors thrive on controversy without fearing the stroke of midnight. This distinction is important when teaching others about freedom.
