The law professor at the University of George Washington, Jonathan Turley, said on Thursday that former CIA director John Brennan could face criminal charges following new documents concerning the “Russiagate” scandal.

The director of national intelligence Tulsi Gabbard published documents and a memo Friday detailing what she called a “coup of several years” against Trump after having beaten Clinton in the 2016 presidential race, adding that she had referred the documents to the Ministry of Justice for a potential criminal activity. Turley said that if the Supreme Court’s decision in 2024 in favor of Trump’s immunity allegations on “official acts” because the president would protect Obama, Brennan and Comey may not be as lucky. “It seems that some of these figures may have made a perjury. I think that the most vulnerable can be Brennan, who is, like a 30-point outdoor male,” said Turley. “This thing goes directly to the information he has given to the congress and seems to be in contradiction, and there are therefore real questions here.”

During the testimony of the congress, Brennan said he had not approved, including the so-called “Steele file” in intelligence assessments on allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 elections.

“People speak, well, you cannot charge Obama. This is most likely that it is protected,” said Turley. “But these individuals, whether Comey or Brennan, are not protected against the accusations of perjury if the statue of the limitations has not worked. They are more likely to be called to repeat previous testimonies.”

The file created by former British intelligence agent Christopher Steele has been quoted several times on CNN, MSNBC and other business media to advance the unproven claims according to which former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 presidential race due to Russian interference in the elections. Clinton’s campaign and the National Democratic Committee were fined by the Federal Electoral Commission in 2022 for their involvement in the discreet file, which was used to continue the allegations of collusion, CNN reported.
