Judge rejects asylum application from Kilmar Abrego Garcia in Baltimore

An American immigration judge rejected an asylum offer from Kilmar Abrego Garcia on Wednesday, whose case has become an indirect indicator of the partisan struggle about immigration policy.

The judge of the Baltimore Immigration Court rejected a request to reopen the Abrego Garcia case in 2019, but this is not the last word. Abrego Garcia has 30 days to call on the immigration council.

The national Salvadoran has an American woman and children and has lived in Maryland for years, but he initially immigrated to the United States illegally in adolescence. In 2019, he was arrested by immigration agents. He asked for asylum but was not eligible because he had been in the country for more than a year. However, the judge judged that he could not be expelled to El Salvador, where he faced a danger of a gang that targeted his family.

When he was wrongly expelled to El Salvador in March and remained in a notorious prison, his case has become a rallying point for those who have opposed the repression of the immigration of President Donald Trump. While facing these criminal accusations in Tennessee, based on a traffic stop in 2022, American immigration and customs application also seek to deport it to a third country, first offering Uganda, then Eswatini. His lawyers have denounced criminal accusations and expulsion efforts, saying that they are an attempt to punish him for defending the administration.
