Jury Reaches Verdict in Judge Hannah Dugan Case on Obstructing Federal Agents Over Illegal Alien – RedState

Judge Hannah Dugan’s trial was this week.

You may remember the case of the Wisconsin judge who was accused of trying to help an illegal alien escape federal agents in the hallway while the alien appeared in Dugan’s courtroom.

The judge had been charged with obstruction, a felony, and concealing an individual to prevent apprehension, a misdemeanor.

An FBI agent who led the investigation said that after the agents left the hallway, she immediately placed Flores-Ruiz’s case at the top of her docket, told him he could appear at his next hearing via Zoom and marched him out the private door.

Prosecutors also played audio recordings from her courtroom in which she can be heard telling her court reporter that she would take “the pressure” for leading Flores-Ruiz to the back.

Her lawyers countered that she was trying to follow courthouse protocols that required court employees to report any immigration officers to their supervisors and that she did not intentionally try to obstruct the arrest team.

The defense concluded Thursday and the case was handed over to the jury.

It didn’t take long. After six hours, the jury returned a guilty verdict on the obstruction charge. She was acquitted of receiving stolen property.

Apparently she didn’t want to stick around. She and her lawyers “left the courtroom, hid in a side conference room and closed the door without speaking to reporters.”

The jury had a few questions.

During their first chamber of deliberations, the jury had two questions: one about ICE regulations and who should be notified when agents make an arrest. The second question was whether Dugan needed to know who was being arrested. [….]

The government called 19 witnesses, ranging from federal agents to a fellow judge. The defense called two fellow judges, a public defender and former Mayor Tom Barrett, a longtime friend. Dugan herself did not speak.

Eduardo Flores-Ruiz, the illegal alien, was arrested despite his actions and deported in November.
