Letitia James to be questioned about Trump lawsuit
The United States Ministry of Justice has filed an assignment ordering the Prosecutor General of New York, Letitia James, to testify to her investigation into civil fraud on President Donald Trump, said sources.
James won a civil affair against Trump in 2023 – before returning to functions – which accused him of having overvalued his properties in order to contract loans with favorable conditions. He is currently calling for judgment.
No accusation was made against James. His office and Trump argue that the other abused their investigative powers.
James’ office also received another assignment concerning his investigation into the National Rifle Association, according to CBS, the American partner of the BBC.
The investigation into James is conducted by the American prosecutor’s office for the Northern New York District, CBS reports.
The Office of the Prosecutor General of New York retaliated to the investigation into the best head of the application of state laws.
“Any armament of the justice system should disrupt each American,” the office said in a statement.
“We strongly support our successful dispute against the Trump organization and the National Rifle Association, and we will continue to defend the rights of New York.”
Abbe Lowell, lawyer for James, also published a statement, saying that the response against James for investigating Trump’s affairs is “the most blatant and desperate example of this administration putting the president’s political retribution campaign”.
The Ministry of Justice has not publicly commented on the assignments.
In April, the Ministry of Justice accused James of mortgage fraud and prompted prosecutors to file a complaint against it. No charge has yet been deposited.
Trump’s family business was deemed responsible in 2023 for falsification of files and financial statements in order to obtain better conditions on loans and insurance agreements.
In the case brought by James, a judge ruled that the Trump organization was liable to over -expose a penthouse in Trump Tower in New York by saying that he was three times his actual size, among other allegations.
Trump was ordered to pay more than $ 350 million (264 million pounds sterling) in damages in the civil fraud case, which is currently going through the call process. During the case, Trump frequently attacked James by speaking to media outside the courtroom, the appellant “biased and corrupt”.
Trump was criminally convicted of falsifying commercial files in a separate case. Last year, he was found guilty of 34 counts for having fraudulently classified the reimbursements for a payment of the silent money made to the actress of the adult film Stormy Daniels.
During his campaign, Trump promised to take revenge on many of his perceived political enemies – including former President Joe Biden – and others who opposed him.
He dismissed prosecutors who pursued cases against the pro-Trump demonstrators who stormed the Capitol after his defeat against Biden, and appointed loyalists to the main positions of the Ministry of Justice.
Last week, federal officials opened an investigation into Jack Smith, who was appointed special lawyer in 2022 to investigate Trump’s alleged mismanagement of classified documents and his alleged intervention attempt in the 2020 elections.
