Marjorie Taylor Greene Is Playing the Long Game

On Friday evening, in a statement that surprised everyone, Greene announced that she would resign from Congress in January. Once one of Trump’s most vocal allies, she has waged an increasingly bitter war against him in recent months, attacking him on everything from health care to the Epstein files to foreign policy. Trump, she argued, is betraying his movement, betraying his voters as his administration ignores rising costs, attempts to hide embarrassing secrets and supports a failed government in Argentina and a murderous government in Israel.

She reiterated these points in her resignation letter. “Most establishment Republicans, who secretly hate [Trump] and who stabbed him in the back and never defended him against anything, were all welcomed after the election,” she wrote. “If I am pushed aside by MAGA Inc and replaced by the neocons, big pharma, big tech, the military-industrial war complex, foreign leaders, and the elite donor class who can’t even relate to real Americans, then many ordinary Americans have also been pushed aside and replaced.”

If Greene surrenders, she’s not exactly admitting defeat. Nor should she, now that Trump is a lame-duck president and the future of his MAGA movement is highly uncertain. It’s not too early to start imagining — or in Greene’s case, positioning yourself for — post-Trump right-wing politics.
