Mayor Mamdani announces second city-run grocery store will open, will be in the Bronx

A city-run store will open in the Hunts Point neighborhood of the Bronx in 2027, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said.
The 20,000-square-foot store will operate at The Peninsula, an affordable housing complex located on the site of the former Spofford Juvenile Detention Center.
“We’re going to use the power of government to lower prices and make it easier for New Yorkers to put food on the table,” Mamdani said.
Officials hope it will serve as an economic anchor for the South Bronx community.
City leaders asked New Yorkers what they would like to see in a city grocery store, and the answers were pretty clear: cheaper eggs, fresh produce, low prices and a healthy variety.
“The right price is the hard part, it’s not hard to find, but the price is the part, especially when you have to go into town – there are prices, you pay for everything you do here,” said Hunts Point resident Bernardo Rodriguez.
It’s all part of a plan to have the city operating five stores, one in each borough, by the end of the mayor’s first term.
Under Mamdani’s plan, the city owns the land or leases the space and covers construction or renovation costs, and a private contractor manages daily operations where “necessities” will be sold at a discount.
The first store he announced was La Marqueta in East Harlem, scheduled to open by 2029.
The mayor estimates that 77% of households in this part of the South Bronx struggle to afford basic necessities.
