Mexican president expects boxer Chávez Jr to be deported after ICE arrest

Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum said on Friday that she expected the boxer Julio Cesar Chávez Jr. to be deported to Mexico to serve a sentence for arms trafficking and organized crime, after being arrested by Ice in Los Angeles on Thursday.

Chávez was tried in the country illegally last week after making fraudulent statements on a permanent residence request in 2024 according to his marriage to an American citizen.

“Hope is that he will be expelled and will purge the sentence in Mexico,” said Sheinbaum at his daily conference on Friday, referring to the accusations that Chávez faces weapons and drug trafficking.

The 39 -year -old boxer, according to his lawyer Michael Goldstein, was recovered Wednesday by a large number of federal agents while riding a scooter in front of a house where he resides in the high -end district of Los Angeles of Studio City, near Hollywood.

On January 22, 2012, the California Highway Patrol arrested Chávez and charged with alcohol / Dui drugs and driving without a license. On June 23, 2012, the California Superior Court, County of Los Angeles, sentenced Chávez guilty of the offense of conduct under the influence of alcohol and sentenced it to 13 days in prison and 36 months of probation.

On January 14, 2023, a district judge issued an arrest warrant against Chávez for the offense of organized crime in order to commit crimes of arms trafficking and manufacturing crimes, in the modality of those who participated in the clandestine of weapons, ammunition, cartridges, explosives in the country; And those who make weapons, ammunition, cartridges and explosives without the corresponding license.

On January 7, 2024, the Los Angeles police department arrested Chávez and charged him with illegal possession of a weapon and the production of a short -gun rifle. The court sentenced Chávez to these accusations.

The DHS also suspects that Chávez would be considered an affiliate of the Sinaloa cartel, an designated foreign terrorist organization. Chávez’s application was based on his marriage to an American citizen, who is linked to the Sinaloa cartel by a previous relationship with the deceased son of the famous leader of the cartel Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, according to DHS.

According to the DHS, in December 2024, the citizenship and immigration services of the United States had referred to the ice that Chávez was a “blatant threat of public security”, but it was authorized to reintegrate the country on January 4, 2025 after the files indicated that the Biden administration had not given it a priority for applying immigration.
